Eagles Capture Singles and Doubles Titles in Georgia Southern Invitational
Facing off against North Florida’s Glen Maslau for the singles title, Verdam quickly held the advantage, grabbing a 6-3 first set. The Helvrsersum, Netherlands native lost no momentum in the second-set, taking the title with a 6-4 decision. Verdam went a perfect 3-0 in the weekend tournament for his first outing as an Eagle.
“Matthijs played well in his first collegiate tournament and seemed to have saved his best performance for the finals today,” stated head coach Justin Miles. “I am proud of the way he fought hard and came out with the win against a solid player."
Competing for doubles titles, Castanhel and Garrido displayed an encouraging effort for the Eagles, as they nabbed their first title as a doubles tandem with a convincing 8-5 victory in flight ‘B’ doubles. The sophomore Eagles downed Ryan Bouttell and Gakalp Ozdemir of Kennesaw State for the title.
"Alain and Edio played a solid doubles match in the finals today,” said Miles. “They have shown great improvements in their game as a doubles pair to start the year.”
Teammates Gregory Bekkers (Antwerp, Belgium) and Verdam suffered a tough loss to Armstrong Atlantic’s Mikk Irdoja and Rafael Array in the finals of flight ‘A’ doubles. The Eagle duo fell 8-1 in the final.
Meanwhile, Alex Yuille and Sebastian Felt captured the back draw of ‘B’ doubles title with an 8-3 win over Justin Suesserman and Dylan Higgins of Kennesaw State.
"Overall this was a good tournament to start the fall season,” Miles stated. “We got to see how we perform in true competition outside of practice and have seen the things we need to improve upon before our next tournament."
The Eagles are back in action when they travel to the Seminole Invitational, October 2-4, in Tallahassee, Fla.
