Georgia Southern Travels To High Point For Flash Gordon Tournament

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Eagles travel to High Point, N.C., this weekend for the Flash Gordon Soccer Tournament. Georgia Southern will face host High Point on Friday, September 10 at 7 p.m. and conclude the tournament against Radford on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 1 p.m.

Georgia Southern comes into the tournament with a 1-1-0 record after falling to Jacksonville 2-1 in overtime Tuesday, Sept. 7. Four players have combined to score five goals for the Eagles in just two games this season, led by Witt Carlisle (Alpharetta, Ga.) with a pair of goals against USC Upstate. Freshman Hunter Norton (Evans, Ga.) joined the list, scoring a goal in the first half against Jacksonville.

Ryan Platt (Preston, England) has commanded the goalkeeping duties for the Eagles, making 13 saves in two games, including eight against Jacksonville.

High Point enters the tournament 2-1-0, with wins over Elon (1-0) and Rider (5-0). Five different players have scored a goal for the Panthers, led by Scott Rojo and Shane Malcolm, who each have a goal and an assist.

Michael Chesler has started all three games in goal for High Point, but has only faced eight shots on goal, saving five. The junior goalkeeper has started 42 games throughout his career.

This will be the fifth meeting between Georgia Southern and High Point, with each team winning twice. The first match was a 3-0 win for the Eagles on Nov. 7, 1980, while High Point took a 2-0 victory in the last contest on Sept. 25, 2004.

Radford brings a 1-1-0 record into the tournament, falling 3-1 to Marshall after beating Mount St. Marys 3-2 in overtime. The Highlanders are led offensively by Mike Handlin and Bernardo Ulma, who have both scored and assisted on a goal. Two other Highlanders have also found the back of the net. Ryan Taylor has played every minute in goal, making 11 saves.

Georgia Southern and Radford have played three times with a 1-1-1 record. The first match was a scoreless draw on Sept. 11, 1994, while the Eagles took the last game 1-0 on Sept. 16, 2007.
