Men?s Soccer is set to face Wofford Saturday and Mercer Tuesday

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern men’s soccer team will travel to Wofford Saturday and then return home to face Mercer on Tuesday.

 

The Wofford Terriers are 5-9-0 (1-3-0) on the season and are currently in a three-way tie for last place in the SoCon. The Eagles will face Wofford on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C.

 

The Terriers boast the reigning SoCon player of the week in Thomas Hunter. Hunter made only his second start of the season at goalkeeper and earned a 1-0 shutout against Furman. He also made eight saves in the match.

 

Wofford takes a large amount of shots ranking third in the conference, but they don’t have much to show for it. They are next to last in points, goals and assists in the SoCon.

 

The Terriers’ defense is solid and boasts the third lowest goals against average in the conference. They are only allowing on average 1.25 goals per match.

 

Georgia Southern has dominated the all-time series against Wofford and owns a 12-2-4 record. The Eagles are on a five game win streak and are 7-0-3 in the last 10 matches against the Terriers.

 

The Mercer Bears are 1-8-5 (1-3-3) on the season and rank seventh in their conference standings.

 

The Bears’ offense is near or at the bottom of the A-Sun. They rank 10th in shots, eighth in assists, ninth in points and ninth in goals.

 

The Mercer defense ranks ninth in goals against average and is allowing around two goals a match.

 

The Mercer series is one of the longest in Georgia Southern history. The two teams have met 40 times in the past. The Eagles hold a 23-17 advantage in the all-time series. The Bears won last season’s match 1-0 in the first overtime period.

 

The Eagles’ offense ranks sixth in points, goals and fourth in assists in the SoCon.

 

The Georgia Southern defense ranks fifth in goals against average and is allowing around a goal and a half per match.

 

B.J. Reine (Baton Rouge, La.) has been hot of late for the Eagles. He has scored four goals this season all of which were scored after the start of conference play on October 4th. Reine scored two goals in the Eagles’ latest match against Gardner-Webb last Friday.
