Men's Soccer Drops Home Opener to Campbell
STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern men's soccer team (0-3) fell to Campbell (1-2) 1-0 in the home opener Tuesday.
The Eagles held Campbell to only five shots on goal and recorded four themselves but were unable to tie the match after the Camels' early goal.
Pat Danford headed in a lob pass off of a corner kick from Mitchell Cardenas in the 15th minute. The Eagles got four corners to the Camels one in the first half.
Joey Ralph (Evans, Ga.) made a number of nice saves to hold Campbell to one goal. Ralph left the net and blocked a shot by Vince Petrasso from inside the box in the first half. He also made an outstanding save on a penalty shot with three minutes remaining in the second half.
The Eagles went on the attack after the goal in the first half. Rich Heyer (Tupelo, Miss.) made a nice move past two defenders in front of the box but was unable to complete the chance.
Georgia Southern had opportunities in the second half. Joe Hughes (Mooresville, N.C.) received a lob pass in front of the box but was unable to keep control of the ball. A bad pass to a Campbell defender led to a breakaway opportunity for Hughes.
The Eagles got four shots on goal. Jon Cox (Alpharetta, Ga.) was the first to respond to the Camel's goal. He put a shot on target in the 19th minute. Cameron Troutman (Ocean Springs, Miss.) took a shot on goal that a Campbell defender stopped in the 31st minute. Matt Crowell (St. Augustine, Fla.) and David Leonard (Augusta, Ga.) recorded second half shots on goal.
Men's soccer returns to action this weekend in the Gonzaga/Nike Soccer Classic. The Eagles will take on Gonzaga Friday at 7 p.m. and Oregon State at 1:30 p.m.
