Elon Takes Win in Regular Season Finale
STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Men's Soccer team finished the regular season Friday, honoring its seniors prior to the start of the match. Six seniors finished their careers at Eagle Field: midfielders Steven Hunter (Douglasville, Ga.), David Leonard (Augusta, Ga.) and Matt Crowell (St. Augustine, Fla.), forward Jon Cox (Alpharetta, Ga.), defensive back Austin Steele (Kennesaw, Ga.) and goalkeeper Zach Buckley (Forsyth, Ga.).
Elon topped Georgia Southern 4-1 with three goals in the second period. The Phoenix struck first when Nick Butterly capitalized on a corner kick crossed by Gabe Latigue in the 25th minute. Elon held onto the 1-0 advantage through the first half.
Elon's Chris Thomas extended the lead with a header that snuck in the left side of the net for a 2-0 margin. The Eagles pulled within one goal as Steele recorded his third goal of the season on a penalty kick at 68 minutes.
Elon struck again in the 81st minute when Thomas delivered a pass to Drew Gardner who directed a header into the back of the net.
The Phoenix added another score in the final minute when Thomas eluded Eagle keeper Neal Bates (Watkinsville, Ga.), for a 4-1 Elon final tally.
The first round of the Southern Conference tournament will begin on Saturday, November 6th. Georgia Southern's opponent will be announced later this week.
