Eagles Fall at No. 25 Furman, Saturday

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Georgia Southern men’s soccer team fell, 4-0, to No. 25 Furman, Saturday (Sep. 29) at Stone Stadium in front of 1,009 fans.

The Eagles drop to 4-6-0 overall and 1-2-0 in Southern Conference play, while the Paladins improve to 8-1-0, winning their SoCon opener.

The first half remained scoreless as the teams battled back and forth.  It wasn’t until the 34th minute that Furman’s Shea Salinas broke the drought, scoring from five yards out.

Freshman Luigi Clendening (Augusta, Ga.) fired two of his team-high three shots in the first stanza.  His second shot in the 35th minute came after a GSU corner kick, but his header-shot was blocked by the defense, and the two teams later went into the locker room with Furman claiming a 1-0 edge.

Early in the second half, Julian Donaldson (Aurora, Colo.) helped spark the GSU attack after firing a shot in the 49th minute, but his shot was stopped by goalkeeper Bryan Amos.  The Eagles continued to attack the goal and in the next two minutes, Clendening and Brennan Peacock (Carrollton, Texas) added a pair of shots.  But Clendening’s shot was blocked, and Peacock’s blast was stopped by Amos.

Furman added three more winners, one off the foot of Brooks Duff in the 66th minute, and a pair by Chris Davis who came off the bench and scored in the 69th minute, and again in the 79th minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Josh Veal (Lilburn, Ga.) played all 90 minutes in the cage, making two saves on the day.  Furman’s Amos also stopped two shots for the win.

Furman led the Eagles in shots (11-7), while Georgia Southern produced a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Eagles will continue a tough three-game road trip as they face Clemson, Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. at Riggs Field, then, a week later at USC Upstate (Oct. 10) in Spartanburg, S.C.
