Men?s Soccer to face Davidson, Saturday
STATESBORO, Ga. The Georgia Southern’s men soccer team will face Davidson, Saturday afternoon, at 1 p.m. in a Southern Conference match at Eagle Field.
Georgia Southern (5-7-0, 1-2-0) and SoCon foe Davidson (1-10-0, 0-3-0) have met on numerous occasions with Davidson claiming a 17-5-1 lead. In the last meeting between the schools in 2006 at Davidson, the Eagles garnered a 2-1 victory in the first round of the SoCon tournament.
The Eagles are coming in with a 1-0 overtime win against USC-Upstate (Oct. 10) in Spartanburg, S.C. This was the first meeting ever between the two teams. The Wildcats recently fell to the UNC Greensboro Spartans (Oct. 9) with a score of 4-2. The loss was the seventh-consecutive winless game for the Wildcats.
Georgia Southern is led by freshman Luigi Clendening (Augusta, Ga.) with three goals and two assists, while leading the squad with 17 shots. He shares the team-high eight points with junior Daniel Smith (Marietta, Ga.) who has two goals and four assists. Senior Brian Young (Roswell, Ga.) spent ninety six minutes in goal for the Eagles before stopping a penalty kick at the previous game against USC-Upstate. He enters the match against Davidson with 21 saves and a 3-2 record.
The Wildcats are coached by Matt Spear and are led by Robby Hoak with seven points, including three goals and one assist. Machel Turner follows behind with five points, including three assists and one goal. Goalkeeper Robby Goldsberry is coming in with 21 saves and has spent the last six games in the cage for the Wildcats.
