Men?s Soccer Defeats Gardner-Webb 4-1

Statesboro, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Men’s Soccer team defeated Gardner-Webb on Senior Day 4-1 Friday afternoon at Eagle Field.

 

“Gardner-Webb is a good team, and I was excited to get the win,” said Head Coach Kevin Kennedy. “They are atop of the Big South right now, and we had a great result against them.”

 

Senior B.J. Reine (Baton Rouge, La.) scored two goals on the day including the game-winning goal.

 

“Our seniors stepped up and played well for us today. Three of our goals came from seniors,” said coach Kennedy.

 

The Eagles got on the board early in only the fifth minute of play. Senior Jon Kinsler (Ormond Beach, Fla.) scored off of a Danny Hall (Conyers, Ga.) pass to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

 

Gardner-Webb tied the match when Richard Gray scored on a breakaway shot opportunity in the 32nd minute. The goal was set up by a Ryan Snodgrass pass.

 

Reine gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead before the half. Joe Madigan (Centennial, Colo.) assisted on the goal.

 

Madigan finished the day with a shot on goal and an assist.

 

Reine scored his fourth goal of the season in the 79th minute of action. Fredrik Langseth (Lorenskog, Norway) assisted on the play.

 

David Leonard (Augusta, Ga.) scored his first goal of the season and gave the Eagles a 4-1 lead in the 84th minute. He scored off of an Abdigani Abdulahi (Atlanta, Ga.) shot that rebounded to him.

 

“I am excited for Leonard. It is good to have some depth up top,” said Coach Kennedy.

 

The Eagles improved to 4-7-0 (1-3-0), while Gardner-Webb falls to 3-7-0 (2-1-0).

 

Georgia Southern returns to conference action next Saturday at Wofford at 6 p.m.
