Charleston Pulls Away from Men's Soccer in the Second Half
STATESBORO, Ga. - The College of Charleston (8-7-0, 2-2-0) pulled away from the Georgia Southern men's soccer team (0-11-1, 0-2-0) 2-0 after two second-half goals.
Matt Morris led the Cougars with six shots and scored the first goal of the match on a header in the 49th minute. Steven Nagy crossed the ball into the box and set up Morris' fifth goal of the season.
The Cougars were awarded a penalty kick in the 80th, and Zach Prince launched the kick into the top of the net.
The College of Charleston controlled the first half and out shot the Eagles 11-3. Morris recorded the first three shots for the Cougars and forced Mike Gubosh (Evans, Ga.) to make a save in the 13th minute.
Three minutes later, Tyler Vukoder hit the crossbar with a troublesome shot from outside the box.
Zach Prince tallied a pair of shots in the 19th minute and forced a second save by Gubosh.
The Cougars took two more shots before the Eagles got a pair of corner kicks in the 26th minute, which led to a shot by David Leonard (Augusta, Ga.).
Adam Guediri (Marietta, Ga.) crossed the ball to Witt Carlisle (Alpharetta, Ga.), setting up a nice chance for the Eagles in the 32nd minute. Carlisle took off on a breakaway in the 36th minute, but a collision with a goalie denied him of the goal.
Jon Cox (Alpharetta, Ga.) used a nice through pass in the 39th minute to try and give Georgia Southern another chance at a goal.
Carlisle finally found the target in the 40th minute and recorded the Eagles' first shot on goal.
The second saw the Eagles' offense get back on track as they recorded eight shots, but the Cougars scored a quick goal in the 49th minute. Morris headed in a pass from Nagy for his fifth goal of the season.
Carlise tried to tie the match in the 62nd minute with a shot on goal. Connor Talbert (Centennial, Colo.) launched a shot in the 65th minute that just missed high of the crossbar.
Danny Hall (Conyers, Ga.) notched a shot on goal in the 67th minute, forcing Clark Hankins to make the save.
The College of Charleston got their second goal off a penalty kick in the 80th minute and took a two-goal lead.
Aleksandar Tomic (Sydney, Australia) took the final shot for the Eagles and put it on target, but Hankins made the save.
The Eagles return to action Wednesday in a home match with Wofford at 2 p.m.
