Eagles Draw Gardner-Webb, 1-1
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Georgia Southern Men's Soccer closed out its part of the SoCon/Big South Shootout with a 1-1 draw against Gardner-Webb on Saturday, September 3rd, at Winthrop's Eagle Field. The Eagles trailed late, but scored an 86th minute equalizer to force an extra period. The Eagles were denied the game-winning goal by the post to move to 1-1-1 on the year.
Gardner-Webb took a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute with a rebound goal by Chris Davis. He cleaned up a loose shot by Jovan Ivanovich for his second goal of the season.
Georgia Southern drew even in the 86th minute with a goal from Witt Carlisle (Alpharetta, Ga.). The Eagle striker got the ball in space from Luigi Clendening (Augusta, Ga.) and turned to score his third goal of the season into the lower corner of the net.
In overtime, Georgia Southern had a chance to win the match with three minutes remaining. Carlisle crossed a ball by an open net to David Vargas Masís (Cartago, Costa Rica) who had his game-winning attempt hit the post and bounce wide.
The Eagles were out-shot 19-9 on the night as goalkeeper Ryan Platt was forced to make six saves to the Bulldog keeper's two.
The Eagles travel to the Belmont Invitational next weekend in Nashville, Tenn. Georgia Southern faces Belmont on Friday night, September 9th at 7 p.m. and closes the tournament against Lipscomb on Sunday, September 11, at 12 p.m.
