Eagles Return to Course at John Hayt Invitational
“Sawgrass Country Club is a well-designed course that can play differently depending on the severity of the wind each day,” said Eagle head coach Larry Mays. “We are bringing back some guys that traveled there last year and therefore gained experience on the course. But I think our team this year is built for playing tougher courses like this one, so hopefully, we can go down there and compete well.”
First round action will begin on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. with scheduled tee times as well on Monday. The 15-team field, which includes eight ranked teams in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, will begin the final 18 holes on Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m.
Last season’s champion, No. 34 LSU, will return to defend its title in addition to No. 3 ranked Florida, No. 12 Alabama, Coastal Carolina, No. 33 Duke, Furman, Mercer, No. 27 N.C. State, No. 13 TCU, No. 24 Tennessee, Tulsa, UAB, Central Florida and host No. 29 North Florida.
Comprising the traveling five for Georgia Southern will be Ryan Zabroske (Alpharetta, Ga.), Spence Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C.), Matt Deal (Statesboro, Ga.), Florian Sander (Bregenz, Austria) and Joe Monte (Chantilly, Va.). Junior Logan Blondell (Lakeland, Fla.) will compete as an individual.
The Eagles opened the spring season at the Gator Invitational two weeks ago, finishing the tournament in ninth out of 14 teams. Senior Zabroske led the way for GS, tying for 19th with a three-day tournament total, 8-over 218 after firing a third round 68.
“Our ball striking was good at the Gator Invitational, but since then, we’ve been working on our short putts and chipping,” stated Mays. “To do well in this tournament, we have to get off to a better start. We’ve been struggling with that all season and come back with two solid second and third rounds. But we have to be more prepared from the start and if we can do that, we will have a good finish.”
