Golf Ties for Seventh at Shoal Creek

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Georgia Southern shot the third-lowest final round of the day, and wound up in a tie for seventh place at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate. The tournament, played at the Shoal Creek Country Club, finished Tuesday morning (Sept. 23).

Led by Jordan Johnstun’s (Evans/LaGrange) final round 1-under 71, the Eagles shot 294 to finish in a tie with LSU for seventh place in the 12-team field (896 overall).

Baylor led from the start, shooting an 880. Mississippi was two strokes back, followed by host UAB at 890, Tulsa (892), East Tennessee State (893) and Auburn (895) rounding out the top six. The Eagles and LSU finished one stroke behind. Texas Tech (898), North Florida (900), Wake Forest (906) and Oklahoma (930) rounded out the field.

Logan Blondell (Lakeland, FL/Lakeland) and Drew Lethem (Camdenton, MO/Olathe East/Odessa CC) finished in a tie for 18th overall, shooting an 8-over 224. Blondell carded a 1-over 73 while Lethem shot a 75 on Tuesday.

Johnstun finished with a 228 overall, tying for 34th place. Spencer Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C./Southwest Edgecomb) was one shot behind Johnstun, tying for 36th place. Sean Brannan (Duncansville, PA/Hollidaysburg Area) tied for 41st overall shooting 231.

“We got off to a dreadful start, that first round killed us. I challenged our team last night not to make any double bogeys and we made only one all day,” said head coach Larry Mays. “We went out and redeemed ourselves, playing well on a really good golf course. I thought our team showed a lot of heart to bounce back like that. I think at the end of the season you could see 10, 11 or maybe all 12 teams in the postseason.”
