Golf Finishes Competition at Gopher Invitational

WAYZATA, Minn. – Georgia Southern golf concluded its first tournament of the 2007-2008 season, Sunday afternoon, at the Gopher Invitational, held at the 7,020-yard, par-72 Spring Hill Golf Club.

Junior Drew Lethem (Camdenton, Mo.) led the Eagles shooting an 11-over 227 and tying for 24th place. Georgia Southern finished in 11th place, 24 strokes ahead of Princeton.

Ranked No. 16 by the Golf World/Nike coaches pre-season poll going into the tournament, Lamar garnered a solid tournament victory, shooting a 4-over 868 and led the next best competitor by 22 strokes.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do,” said head coach Larry Mays. “We just need to go back to basics. A lot of it is mental. The course was very difficult and we had cold conditions. So, we’ll break them down tomorrow, and then build them back up the rest of the week.”

The Eagles have a week to prepare for the next tournament, the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate, which will be held Monday and Tuesday, Sep. 24 and 25, at Shoal Creek Country Club in Birmingham, Ala.
