Golf Prepares for Raines Development Intercollegiate

FLORENCE, S.C. – Georgia Southern University will get an early look at several Southern Conference opponents, competing in the Raines Development Intercollegiate at The Country Club of South Carolina. Francis Marion University will play host to the event.

The 18-team field will play 36 holes on Monday (Sept. 15) and finish with 18 holes on Tuesday morning. According to Eagles head coach Larry Mays the format will differ than normal tournaments.

“It’s going to be a different format, during the first 36 holes all five of our golfers will play in the same group. This gives for many of the coaches their first look at how their players will compete in a tournament setting,” said Mays. “I’ll get to see our players in the heat and our guys will get to see one another in the heat of a tournament. There are a lot of SoCon teams and others from around the region.”

Georgia Southern is coming off a sixth place finish at the Maryland Intercollegiate. Senior Jordan Johnstun (Evans/LaGrange) shot a 143 to finish in a tie for 17th overall. Fellow senior Drew Lethem (Camdenton, MO/Olathe East/Odessa CC) shot 144 to finish in a tie for 23rd.

True-freshman Sean Brannan (Duncansville, PA/Hollidaysburg Area) shot a second round 67 to card a 175, finishing in a tie for 30th. Junior Spencer Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C./Southwest Edgecomb) tied for 53rd following identical rounds of 75. Sophomore Logan Blondell (Lakeland, FL/Lakeland) will see his first action of the year. The reigning SoCon ‘Freshman of the Year’ led the Eagles last year averaging 73.3 strokes per round.

“The way college golf is if we go out and play well we can get a lot of wins, or if we don’t anyone can beat you,” stated Mays. “We’ve had a couple good days of practice, they are expecting good weather and the course is in great shape. I’m looking forward to getting out there tomorrow and seeing what we can do.”
