Golf Prepares for Shoal Creek Intercollegiate

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Coming off its record-setting performance last week, the Georgia Southern golf team will compete at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate starting Monday (Sept. 22). The Eagles will play 36 holes on Monday then finish with 18 on Tuesday.

The event will take place at the Shoal Creek Country Club, hosted by UAB. At last year’s Shoal Creek, the Eagles placed ninth in the 12-team field shooting 891. This year head coach Larry Mays has seen his squad get off to a 27-5 start against teams through two tournaments.

“This is a great golf course... it has been host to the U.S. Amateur, U.S. Juniors and the PGA Championship. There are 12 teams in the field and not a bad one in the bunch,” said Mays. “We had a good practice today and we are looking forward to teeing it up tomorrow and keep on playing well.”

Last weekend the Eagles ran away with the Raines Development Group title. GS finished shooting a program- and tournament-record 22-under par 842 (279-279-284) in the 18-team field. Georgia Southern improved on its own record by two strokes, previously set during the 2001 Gator Invitational. The team’s 842 also shattered the previous Raines Development record of 849 set by USC Aiken in 2005. The Eagles won by 13 strokes.

Mays also stated he is staying with the same lineup. Senior Jordan Johnstun (Evans/LaGrange) leads the way averaging 70.4 strokes in five rounds. He finished third last week at the Raines.

Fresh off his runner-up finish, junior Spencer Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C./Southwest Edgecomb) lowered his average to 71.2 having played all five rounds. Fulford’s 206 last week matched the sixth-lowest 54-hole total by an Eagle.

Sophomore Logan Blondell (Lakeland, FL/Lakeland) tied for ninth last week in his first tournament of the season. He is right behind Fulford averaging 71.7 per round.

Senior Drew Lethem (Camdenton, MO/Olathe East/Odessa CC) enters the tournament averaging 72.6, and freshman Sean Brannan (Duncansville, PA/Hollidaysburg Area) is at 73.6 having also played in all five rounds.

The Eagles begin play tomorrow at 8:15 a.m. Live stats will be available at www.golfstat.com.
