Eagles Finish Sixth at Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate
Chattanooga held first place finishing 15-over (855), besting second-place Clemson by seven strokes (862). East Carolina jumped from seventh place into third with the second-lowest round of the day, 289, to complete the tournament at 868 (+28). Liberty slipped into fourth at 869, while Virginia rounded out the top five at 871. Georgia Southern and Furman tied for sixth with matching 872s.
Ben Kohles of Virginia took individualist honors completing 54 holes at 5-under par 205 leading second place Robert Karlsson of Liberty by three strokes.
“Pin placements made the golf course much tougher today for the whole field,” stated head coach Larry Mays. “We didn’t get off to a great start, but I’m proud of Florian [Sander], Spence [Fulford] and Matt [Deal] for hanging in there for solid final rounds. We came up just short of a top five finish, which was our goal, but if we can tighten up just a little bit, we will be in good shape.”
Monte, a Chantilly, Va., native paced the Eagles in the tournament, claiming his highest finish of the season in a two-way tie for 17th. The junior posted a final round 77 to go along with opening rounds of 72 and 69 for an 8-over 218 tournament total.
Redshirt-freshman Florian Sander (Bregenz, Austria) bookended two rounds of 73 with a second round 74 for a three-day total 220. Sander completed the tournament at 10-over par 220 in a tie for 22nd.
Finishing in a tie for 30th, one stroke behind Sander, senior Matt Deal (Statesboro, Ga.) reflected his opening round 74 on the final round with another 4-over par 74. His identical rounds were sandwiched around a second round 73 for a tournament total 221 (+11).
After leading the team through two rounds, senior Ryan Zabroske (Alpharetta, Ga.) carded an 81 on the final day to finish tied for 35th-place at 222.
Senior Fulford (Rocky Mount, N.C.) saved his best round for the round three, leading GS with a two-over par 72 on the day. The senior trimmed his second round score by five strokes to finish with a 225, placing him in a tie for 47th.
Georgia Southern next welcomes 15 teams to Statesboro, Ga. as part of the 31st Annual Schenkel E-Z-GO Invitational. The three-day tournament will be played at Forest Heights Country Club, March 19-21.
“The team is excited our next tournament is our home tournament,” Mays stated. “We’re looking forward to being part of a great tournament and bringing in a great field of teams to Statesboro next week.”
