Georgia Southern Golf Competes in Samford Intercollegiate Monday and Tuesday
VIDEO: Preview with coach Larry Mays
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern golf team returns to action at the Samford Intercollegiate at the Hoover Country Club Monday and Tuesday.
The tournament is slated for two rounds Monday, and the final round is scheduled for Tuesday. GolfWeek top-50 teams Auburn (19) and Vanderbilt (36) are in the 18-team field along with Southern Conference schools Furman, Samford and Western Carolina. The host Bulldogs won the 2012 tournament, and Samford senior Casey O'Toole took the individual title.
The same five Eagles who won the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate in their last outing Feb. 19, in Hilton Head, will tee it up this week.
Reigning SoCon Golfer of the Week Scott Wolfes is averaging 71.10 strokes a round and has finished first or second in five of his seven tournaments this season. Hayden Anderson has a 73.45 scoring average and is coming off a fifth-place finish at the Wexford.
Charlie Martin owns a 73.67 scoring average and tied for 11th at the Wexford, his fourth top-15 finish of the season. Will Evans averages 75 strokes a round and has logged three top-20 outings. Blake Olson has a 78.56 scoring average and has played in every tournament this spring.
"The conditions are probably going to be wet and cold – very similar to what we faced in Hilton Head – maybe even a bit colder," said Georgia Southern coach Larry Mays. "We just have to keep our head down and don't get caught up in what is going on around us. Play against the course and the elements and tally them up at the end."
Following the tournament at Samford, the Eagles will take a week off before hosting the 34th annual Schenkel Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club March 15-17.
