Eagles Open Spring Season at SunTrust Gator Invitational
The event showcases 14 teams from around the south and southeast, ten teams in the top-50 of the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings and four programs in the top 25. Florida is the top ranked squad coming in at No. 14, followed by No. 20 Chattanooga, No. 24 UCF and No. 25 Duke. Georgia Southern enters the contest ranked No. 50.
“There are a lot of good teams from the ACC and SEC and other good programs from around the southeast that will be competing against us this weekend,” said head coach Larry Mays. “Obviously the Gators in Gainesville are tough on their home course. But it’s a great field this year.”
Mays will send a lineup of Logan Blondell, Jordan Johnstun, Drew Lethem, Joe Monte and Ryan Zabroske to the event. “I’d like to go down and have steady play out of all five of our players and have a team effort. We need to compete for a top five finish. If we can come out in the top five, it will show us that all our hard work in the winter is paying off. It can help springboard us to the rest of the spring schedule,” said Mays.
Teams will play 36 holes on Saturday at the par 70, 6,701 yard course followed by an 18-hole third round on Sunday, Feb. 15.
“The guys have been focused and we’ve been working hard. The thing we talked about this spring is accountability. That’s kind of our battle cry; be accountable for everything you do.”
Georgia Southern finished the event a year ago in tenth place with a 21-over 861.
