Eagle Golf to Compete at Gator Invitational

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern golf team will compete in its second tournament of the New Year, Saturday through Sunday, Feb. 9-10, at the SunTrust Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. The tournament will take place at the par-70, 6,701-yard Mark Bostick Golf Course on the campus of the University of Florida, and will feature 14 teams.

The 2007 Gator Invitational team champion, No. 18 Florida, will play host to the following teams (Golfstat ranking): Coastal Carolina (63), Duke (9), Florida State (15), Georgia Southern (88), Georgia State (50), Louisiana State (46), Mississippi State (27), North Florida (74), Ole Miss (20), South Alabama (76), South Florida (146), Alabama-Birmingham (29) and Wake Forest (22).

The two-day, 54-hole tournament will begin Saturday (Feb. 9) with an 8 a.m. first-round shotgun start. After the first round’s 18, the day’s second round 18 will begin with an approximate 1 p.m. shotgun start. The final 18 will be played Sunday (Feb. 10) starting at 8 a.m. and will be followed by the awards ceremony.

Representing Georgia Southern are senior Chris Smith (Alpharetta, Ga.), juniors Drew Lethem (Camdenton, Mo.) and Ryan LeFevre (Boca Raton, Fla.), and freshmen Joe Monte (Chantilly, Va.) and Logan Blondell (Lakeland, Fla.).

Last year, then-senior Bryan Jones hit an even-par 210 to finish in second place, which combined with Smith, Lethem, LeFevre and Jordan Johnstun (Evans, Ga.) helping secure a fifth-place team finish, and bettering UAB, Tulsa, Georgia State, North Florida, Kentucky, Ohio State, LSU, UCF and Purdue. As a team, the Eagles shot a 26-over 866, 16 strokes behind champion Florida.
