Football Spring Practice #1
STATESBORO, Ga. Georgia Southern battled cold weather on Tuesday morning (March 3), the first of 15 scheduled spring football practices.
The team worked out from 7:45-10 a.m. as temperatures were in the 30s at the start, not including the wind chill. The wet field conditions on Monday forced the team to postpone the scheduled opener. But according to head coach Chris Hatcher, his team is used to working out in the cold conditions.
“We have been working out (off-season conditioning) in this weather. We can handle the cold and the rain, it’s just the cold and wet conditions we don’t like. That’s why we moved practice back a day,” said Hatcher.
As he enters his third year, Hatcher was pleased with the Eagles’ effort during day one.
“Today went very well. We were very eager and excited to be out here. We had a good day for practice, our guys flew around... I think we were a little bit ahead for day one,” said Hatcher. “Our guys seemed to know what to do which is always a positive, but more importantly we had a bunch of guys eager to come out here and get better in their football skills and that’s always a positive this early in Spring practice.”
The team will work out Wednesday morning, originally scheduled as a day off but switched due to Monday’s postponement.
POSITION CHANGES: Senior Chris Rogers will have a new position for the third time in his fourth year. After spending the last two years at defensive back, Rogers moved to wide receiver. The former baseball standout began his Georgia Southern career at quarterback in 2006. Last year he started five times in 10 games played recording 45 tackles, three forced fumbles and three pass break-ups... Sophomore Leander Barney moved to wide receiver as well. He caught 22 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown... Anthony Jones moved from defensive back to wide receiver.
