GSU Returns Home for the First of Three Games
STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Football team (4-0, 3-0) returns home for the first of three games at Paulson Stadium. The Eagles will kick off the three-game homestand Saturday at 3:05 p.m. with a top-25 match up against Chattanooga. The game will be aired live on the SoCon TV Network. A number of tickets remain for sale through the Georgia Southern Athletic Ticket Office.
The Eagles won their third Southern Conference game 41-14 and their second on the road at Elon last week. GSU trailed for the first time all year early in the first quarter but quickly bounced back to lead 24-7 at halftime. Jaybo Shaw (Flowery Branch, Ga.) tossed a career-best three scores on six passes in the second and third quarters to help widen the gap with the Phoenix.
Georgia Southern leads the all-time series with the Mocs, 20-4, and are 11-1 at Paulson Stadium. Chattanooga, however, won the 2010 meeting 35-27 behind 21 unanswered points in the second half. The Eagles led 20-14 at the halftime break, but managed just one second-half score, a Shaw run from one-yard out late in the fourth quarter.
"Coach Huesman has that team in Chattanooga playing better than they have in years. I know they are going to be prepared on Saturday," said Head Coach Jeff Monken. "They played an outstanding football game against us last year and beat us at their place. We are going to have to get ready again for another great quarterback receiver combo."
The story in conference play has been the opposite for the Mocs this season. They are winless in two tries after blowing halftime leads in both games. Chattanooga led 3-0 at the break at #3 Appalachian State but fell 14-12 in Boone, N.C. A second-half comeback for the ages propelled The Citadel past Chattanooga 28-27 in last week's contest. The Bulldogs trailed 24-0 at halftime but scored four touchdowns in the second half to pull out the victory.
"The tremendous effort up at Appalachian State was so impressive. This past Saturday they had a big lead, and I know how frustrating that must be for their entire organization," said Monken.
Come out and enjoy family weekend with the Eagles at Paulson Stadium this Saturday. The 2011 Eagle Baseball team will be honored at halftime for their Southern Conference Tournament Championship and NCAA Columbia Regional appearance.
