Men's Basketball Hosts The Citadel on Faculty and Staff Night
GSU (19-8, 12-5) holds the second-longest winning streak in the conference behind Davidson. A win will give the Eagles 20 wins for the third time in the last five years.
The Citadel (6-19, 1-15) snapped their 21-game SoCon losing streak Feb. 14 against Western Carolina. The win also ended a 12-game skid overall. Three of their last five losses have been by seven points or less, including a 75-71 overtime setback at Appalachian State.
“Any league game you’ve got to take seriously,” said head coach Jeff Price. “They’ve certainly gotten better, they’re young but they’re improved and their freshmen really aren’t like freshmen anymore. They’re an improved team that beat Western (Carolina), scared Chattanooga (and) scared App State. If we’re not careful they’ll do the same to us.”
The Bulldogs rely heavily on the 3-point shot, something that plays right into the hands of GSU’s top-ranked 3-point defense. The Eagles hold the opposition to just 32.8% from long range.
“They shot 44 3-point shots last game. We know where they’re going to take a lot of their shots and we’ve got to do a good job of getting out and guarding the 3-point line.”
In the Jan. 12 meeting between the two teams, The Citadel hit seven of their 23 attempts for 30.4%, well under their season averages of 36.3% and nine 3s per game.
Last Thursday GSU held Wofford, the league’s most accurate 3-point team to just a 2-for-19 (10.5%) night, the worst performance by any opponent this season.
Igniting the Eagle offense is senior Louis Graham who went for 25 points Saturday against Elon, one game after setting a new career high of 29 points vs. Wofford. In his last 14 games he is averaging 21.2 points.
Graham and fellow senior Matthew Fields each recorded a double-double Saturday, marking the first time that two GSU teammates had a double-double in the same game since Dec. 12, 2006. For Graham it was his sixth of the season and 30th of his career.
Wednesday will be Faculty and Staff Night. Georgia Southern faculty and staff with a valid ID will be admitted into the game for FREE.
