GSU Heads to Chattanooga for Pivotal Game
CHATTANOOGA, TENN. - Georgia Southern Men's Basketball is back in action on Saturday night against Chattanooga at The McKenzie Arena starting at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles look for their second consecutive win over the Mocs and return to winning form against UTC who fell on Thursday night to Davidson by a single point.
The Eagles got after the Mocs in the game earlier this season with both (St. Mays, Ga.) and (Miramar, Fla.) each scoring 20 points en route to the 84-76 victory. Hewitt was 6-for-8 from beyond the arc while (Statesboro, Ga.) had 17 points. The Eagles led by as many as 16 points with just over four minutes remaining, but the Mocs made a late run to make the game interesting in the waning seconds.
Ferguson is the top scorer this season for the Eagles with 16.7 points per game in league play and 15.8 points per game overall. The Eagles enter Saturday's game with an 8-12 overall record and 6-4 in league play. Georgia Southern is third in the SoCon South, just a half game behind Wofford for second place.
Chattanooga was poised to take Davidson to overtime on Thursday night, but a foul by Omar Wattad with just one second remaining gave the Wildcats, the league's best free throw shooting team, a trip to the line to win the game. Davidson made one-of-two free throws to take the 64-63 victory from the Mocs.
Ricky Taylor leads the Mocs in scoring with 13.6 points per game, followed closely by Wattad with 13.3 ppg. Chattanooga is 9-13 overall and 3-6 in SoCon play, good for last place in the SoCon North.
The Eagles have a week off before traveling to Western Carolina next weekend. The game in Cullowhee's Ramsey Center starts at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 4th.
