Wirnsberger Named SoCon Player of the Week
STATESBORO, Ga. Georgia Southern junior third baseman A.J. Wirnsberger (Tuscaloosa, AL/Paul Bryant) was named Southern Conference Player of the Week’. The league office announced the award on Monday (May 18). He becomes the second Eagle hitter to earn the weekly award this year (Griffin Benedict in March), and first time Wirnsberger won that award in his career.
Wirnsberger batted .647 (11-of-17) to help the Eagles close out the regular season with a SoCon sweep of Wofford and 3-1 record on the week. He scored six runs and drove in nine, hitting a home run in each of the three Wofford games.
On the week Wirnsberger posted a 1.294 slugging percentage, .684 on-base percentage and played error-free ball at third base.
Following an 0-for-3 game at The Citadel in late April, Wirnsberger’s batting average dropped to .254, however, the Third Team Preseason All-America pick has been on a tear since. In the 12 games since, the junior is 23-of-44 at the plate (.523) with seven homers, 14 runs scored and 23 RBI.
Overall he is now batting at a .324 clip with 38 runs scored. Wirnsberger leads the Eagles with 13 home runs and 55 RBI. He moved into a tie for 10th place on the GS career home run list with 38.
The second-seeded Eagles open up the 2009 Southern Conference Tournament, playing in the 9 a.m. game on Wednesday (May 20) against seventh-seed Davidson. All games will be played at Flour Field in Greenville, South Carolina.
