Victor Roache's Career Week Nets Him SoCon Player of the Week Honors
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Victor Roache's (Ypsilanti, Mich.) career week of six home runs, including three in a single game, netted him Southern Conference Player of the Week Honors as announced by the league office on Monday, April 4th. He was the first Eagle to hit five or more homers in a week since Chris Shehan launched five during the week of March 11th, 2008.
Roache started the week with a solo shot in at Jacksonville to give Georgia Southern its first run of the game in the seventh inning. He did not homer in the first game of The Citadel series, but rebounded with three bombs on Saturday and two more on Sunday. Roache was the first GSU player in over 10 years to hit three dingers in one contest. The last was Matt Easterday against East Tennessee State on March 25th, 2000.
The sophomore hit .611 (11-18) on the week with six home runs, a double and 13 RBIs. He slugged 1.667 with 30 total bases and moved into a tie for the NCAA Division I lead with 12 home runs on the season. Roache struck out only once on the week in his final at-bat on Sunday and received a standing ovation from the crowd for his stellar performance.
Georgia Southern returns to J.I. Clements Stadium for a single game against in-state opponent Mercer on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Eagles will make their longest road trip of the season this weekend when they venture out to Beckley, W.Va. to face Marshall.
