Benedict Named SoCon Player of the Week

STATESBORO, Ga. – Griffin Benedict (Dunwoody/St. Pius) batted .647 last week, including tying a NCAA record by hitting two home runs in the same inning, and the senior catcher was voted Southern Conference ‘Player of the Week’. It’s the first SoCon weekly award in his career.

He helped the Eagles to a 4-0 mark last week, including wins over Winthrop and #20 East Carolina. Improving to 11-1 overall, Georgia Southern is off to its best start since 1979 (13-0) and received votes in this week’s National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll but could not crack the ‘Top 30’. The Eagles, along with Charleston and Western Carolina, received votes this week.

Georgia Southern is currently tied for the eighth-most wins in the country, tied for seventh in winning percentage and tied for eighth nationally having won its last seven games in a row.

Benedict tied a NCAA record when he hit two home runs in the seventh inning of Sunday’s 14-4 win over ECU. Overall he scored six runs and drove in seven. Benedict set a career-high going 5-for-5 at the plate and tied a career-high of six RBI.

Overall he leads the hitting attack at a .476 clip with 11 runs scored and 11 RBI. The Preseason All-America pick also owns a .542 on-base percentage and .690 slugging percentage.

The Eagles hit the road for the first time in 2009 on Tuesday night (March 10), traveling to Jacksonville. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. They return home on Wednesday (March 11) for a 6 p.m. game against Bethune-Cookman.
