Baseball Heads North of Atlanta for Final Non-Conference Game
STATESBORO, Ga. - After completing the 2012 home slate on Sunday, the Georgia Southern Baseball team hits the road for the final four games starting with the final non-conference game Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Eagles will complete the regular season at Wofford this weekend but up first is A-Sun foe Kennesaw State.
Georgia Southern (28-24) will travel north of Atlanta to Stillwell Stadium to complete the two-game home-and-home series in the shadows of Kennesaw Mountain. The Eagles travel to the site of Shawn Payne's cycle last year seeking their third-straight series sweep of the Owls.
Kennesaw State (29-21) is seeking its 30th win of the season and like the Eagles are going into their final week of play looking to hold onto their fifth-place spot in the conference standings. The Owls have dropped four of their last five games but picked up a win in the series opener against USC Upstate.
With a good day at the plate, Eric Phillips, who leads the team with 78 hits and a .386 batting average, is poised to tie or set a new school record for career hits just an hour from his hometown of Carrollton, Ga. Phillips leads the team with 21 hits in the last 15 games and moved to within two hits of Scott Henley's all-time mark of 326 hits with a pair of singles against the Catamounts.
The Eagles will send freshman Heath Durand (Martinez, Ga.) to the mound for his second-career start. Durand (1-0, 2.81) has had a solid rookie campaign and has allowed runs in only two of his 10 outings this season. The right-hander has thrown three hitless innings over his last two appearances but allowed three runs in three innings in his last start at Jacksonville.
Kennesaw State ranks second in the A-Sun with a .294 batting average and is sixth in the league with a 4.02 ERA. The Owls are led by catcher Ronnie Freeman's .356 batting average and Andy Chriscaden's 12 home runs and 14 doubles. Weekend starter, Josh Carr, leads the pitching staff with an 8-2 record and a 3.87 ERA in 11 starts this season.
