Ty Wright Named SoCon 'Player of the Month'

STATESBORO, Ga. – Ty Wright (Montrose/West Laurens), a junior on the Georgia Southern baseball team, was tabbed as the Southern Conference’s ‘Player of the Month’ for April. It marks the second straight month an Eagle was selected as the league’s top offensive player (Chris Shehan in March).

Wright has spurred the Eagles to an 11-8 record in April, including their current six-game winning streak. Wright, the reigning National ‘Player of the Week’ by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, batted .410 (34-for-83) in 19 games played. He scored 28 runs and drove in 29, along with his 13 doubles, nine home runs and nine stolen bases. Wright recorded a .916 slugging percentage for the month and .474 on-base percentage.

During the Wofford finale last Sunday (April 27), Wright joined teammate David Richardson in hitting for the cycle – doing so in consecutive innings. The junior DH hit a single to start the game; a 2-run home run in the 2nd; RBI triple in the 3rd inning; and 2-run double in the 4th.

Wright entered this week second nationally with a .841 slugging percentage. He also ranks 43rd batting at a .409 clip, stands 15th in runs scored (1.34), 24th in doubles (0.46), tied for 11th in home runs (0.37) and 47th in on-base percentage (.506) from his leadoff spot. Wright, a transfer from ABAC, has already set a Georgia Southern record as six of his 14 home runs this year have led off a game.

The Eagles continue their eight-game stretch at home, facing The Citadel in Southern Conference action. The three-game series begins Friday night (May 2), first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
