Shehan Hits Two Homers But Eagles Lose in Tournament Play
The Eagles (33-24 overall) will face UNC Greensboro in an elimination game Friday afternoon, first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m. GS defeated the Spartans 21-9 in the tournament’s first round game Wednesday.
Elon got a one-out single in the first. Drew Murray (LaGrange/LaGrange) recorded the second out on a flyball. Donny Jobe tried stealing second but Griffin Benedict (Dunwoody/St. Pius) nailed him for the final out. Bennett Davis led off the second with a double. He scored on Mike Melillo’s RBI single. With two outs, Benedict threw down to Jeremiah Parker (Carrollton/Carrollton) at first base to pick off Melillo to end the frame.
The Eagles used the long ball again to take the lead in the third. Phillip Porter (Marietta/Sprayberry) was hit by a pitch in the cheek and had to leave the game. Shehan followed by hitting his 21st home run of the year.
With two down in the fourth, Chase Austin hit a 2-run homer down the left field line to give Elon a 3-2 lead. Cory Harrilchak added a 2-run shot in the fifth making it 5-2.
In the fifth Jonathan King (
Brian Pierce (Roswell/Roswell) hit a leadoff double then two batters later Ty Wright (Montrose/West Laurens) walked on four pitches. With two down, Shehan hit the first pitch from Jesse Lewter down the left field line, his 22nd home run of the year and third career 2-HR game.
In the seventh Tony Chisman (Conyers/Salem) got a leadoff strikeout but gave up a single. Blake Nation (Brooks/Starr’s Mill) got a groundout for the second out then the Eagles intentionally walked Harrilchak.
Shehan finished with three hits, two runs scored and five RBI. His two runs scored added to his GS season record, at 83 and counting. For the third time in the last three years Shehan has strung together a career-long 14-game hitting streak.
Jeremy Beckham (Griffin/Griffin) and Wright added two hits apiece.
Daniel Britt was charged for two runs on three hits in 2.1 innings, hitting three batters. Lewter (5-2) picked up the win. He allowed three runs on six hits in five innings.
