Baseball Begins Six Game Homestand on Tuesday Night

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Baseball begins a six-game homestand at J.I. Clements Stadium, starting Tuesday night (March 11) against USC Upstate. The Eagles are looking to improve on their 6-6 record.

The Eagles won 2-of-3 games last weekend at the Keith LeClair Classic, defeating #15 Michigan 12-3 and Pittsburgh 3-2 before falling to host East Carolina 9-3.

 

Phillip Porter (Marietta/Sprayberry) leads the hitting attack at a .500 clip with seven RBI. Matt Miller (Canton/Woodstock) hit two of his three home runs this season during the wins at the LeClair Classic, including a walk-off shot to start the bottom of the 10th against Pitt. He stands .380 batting with a team-leading 17 runs scored and six doubles. In addition Miller has driven in 12 runs, walked 12 times and stolen 3-of-5 bases. Porter (4-of-5 stolen bases) owns a .543 on-base percentage while Miller is at a .500 clip in addition to his team-leading .720 slugging percentage.

 

Kyle Blackburn (Marietta/Walton) leads the squad with four home runs, hitting at a .356 clip. The sophomore designated hitter is one of eight starters for GS hitting .300 or better.

 

Overall the Eagles own a .323 team batting average, along with a .972 fielding percentage and an ERA lowered to 7.09.

 

Redshirt-freshman Justin Davis (Pulaski/Metter) will start game one of the USC Upstate series. He owns a 0-1 record and 8.00 ERA in nine innings of work. Davis has fanned 11 batters.

 

The Spartans (5-6 overall) dropped 2-of-3 last weekend at Mercer in Atlantic Sun Conference play. USC Upstate owns a .239 team batting average, .961 fielding clip and 4.91 ERA.

 

Andrew Runion leads the hitting at a .350 mark with two homers and nine RBI. Phillip Morgan (.286) has three doubles, two homers and a team-high 15 RBI.

 

Left-handed Phillip Myers is scheduled to throw game one. He owns a 0-1 record a 4.50 ERA in eight innings. Freshman right-hander Robert Stegbauer will throw Wednesday. He brings a 0-1 record and 4.20 ERA in 15 innings into the contest.
