STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern men's soccer graduate Thor Sveinbjornsson has been named one of the six Sun Belt Conference Postgraduate Scholarship Award Winners, announced today by conference officials.

Sveinbjornsson will receive a $3,000 scholarship towards his master's degree in accounting, which he is currently pursuing at Georgia Southern.

A four-year standout on the field for the Eagles, Sveinbjornsson was a four-time Sun Belt Conference Academic honoree as well as earning 2014 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year honors. A 2014 All-Sun Belt selection, he played in 58 career matches in the midfield at Georgia Southern, tallying two goals and five assists in his more than 3,500 minutes on the pitch.

A native of Hafnarfjordur, Iceland, Sveinbjornsson was a key component of Georgia Southern's 2016 Sun Belt Championship squad and also earned NSCAA Scholar All-South Region honors that season. He graduated this May with his bachelor's degree in accounting.

"This recognition from Sun Belt helps complete an impressive four years in Statesboro for Thor, and I couldn't be happier for him," Georgia Southern Head Men's Soccer Coach John Murphy said. "As a two-year captain for our team, he has been a very impressive young man both on and off the field.  Furthermore, as a two time Sun Belt Conference All Star and 2014 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, he has had an impact on our program's success. More importantly, has left a legacy for his teammates regarding how to handle adversity in life with dignity and class. I know his future will be very bright and I look forward to following his life's path in the coming years."
