STATESBORO - Junior
Steven Fisk of the Georgia Southern men's golf team has been selected as an at-large individual player and will play in the 2018 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Kissimmee Regional, hosted by UCF at Reunion Resort in Kissimmee, Florida, as announced by the NCAA on Wednesday evening. He was one of 45 players on teams that did not make the NCAA Championship to be selected based on individual rankings.
The 54-hole regional will be held on May 14-16 and will mark Fisk's second straight year playing in one of the six NCAA Regionals. Last year, he finished tied for 15th at the NCAA Austin Regional as the GS team was chosen as an at-large selection.
Fisk's selection as an at-large individual golfer to regionals will be the first for a GS golfer since Bo Fennell in 1991.
"I'm so proud of Steven and the year he has had so far," head coach
Carter Collins said. "He has earned his spot in the post-season and we are proud to have Georgia Southern representation at NCAA Regionals."
Fisk was recently named a semifinalist for the Division I Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award and is currently ranked 21st by Golfstat. The Stockbridge, Georgia, native has shot 72 or better in 25 of 30 rounds this season and finished in the top-10 in seven of 10 events, including three top-5s and two wins. He was named to the Haskins Award Watch List and the Ben Hogan Award Watch List and spent a majority of the season ranked in the top-10 for the U.S. Palmer Cup team.
Named Sun Belt Golfer of the Week three times this season, Fisk became the 13th player in college golf history to shoot 60, reaching the mark in the second round of the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational in October, and he narrowly missed a 16-footer for birdie on his final hole for 59. His 60 was a school and course record, and he followed that round with a 67 to tie for third. Fisk shot 65 in the final round of the Sun Belt Conference Championship to help the Eagles advance to match play and won his semifinal match to lead GS into the finals.
Fourteen teams were selected to play at the Kissimmee Regional: Vanderbilt, Florida, North Carolina, South Florida, Kent State, Arizona, Purdue, Colorado State, Saint Mary's (CA), UCF, Coastal Carolina, Jacksonville State, Georgetown, Central Connecticut State.
Fisk will be joined by four other individuals: R.J. Keur (UAB), Yanick Schutz (South Alabama), Billy Tom Sargent (Western Kentucky) and Saptak Talwar (Sacred Heart).
The low five teams and low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Men's Golf Championships, held in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on May 25-30 at Karsten Creek.
