QUICK HITS
- Georgia Southern Baseball plays host to Georgia State this weekend where our weekends begin on Thursday. The Eagles enter the final weekend of the regular season with a chance to earn the No. 3 seed for the upcoming Sun Belt Tournament which starts on Tuesday in Acadiana.
- The Eagles scored four runs in the sixth inning to turn around a 1-0 deficit to a 4-1 lead and defeat Arkansas State on Sunday. Four of Georgia Southern's six hits were doubles with three coming in the sixth inning.
David Johnson tossed six innings out of the bullpen to take the win.
- Georgia Southern leads the all-time series with Georgia State by a 64-22 margin. Since joining the Sun Belt, Georgia Southern won the 2015 and 2016 series' two games to one, but dropped last year's series on the road, two games to one.
- Defensively the Eagles not had the greatest season, ranking 11th in the Sun Belt with a .962 fielding percentage. The story behind the number was an injury to shortstop
Austin Thompson which forced him to miss 27 games. The Eagles fielded at a .956 average without Thompson, committing 42 errors. With Thompson, the Eagles have raised that mark to .969, conceding 27 errors in the 24 games he has played.
- After sustaining an injury in the second game of the season,
Tyler Martin missed the next 33 games. He made his return on April 17th against the College of Charleston. He hit his first home run of the season on Saturday, April 21st with a solo home run to left.
- Through the season's first 50 games, Georgia Southern batters have been hit by 74 pitches to lead the Sun Belt and rank 26th in the nation.
Steven Curry has been hit 20 times to rank ninth in the nation and tops in the Sun Belt while
Christian Avant has worn 15 pitches to rank fourth in the league and 42nd in Division I.
-
Brian Eichhorn was one with the force on May 4, tossing a complete game, one-hit shutout to stymie Troy, the league's top hitting team entering the series. Brian fanned nine and walked just one while taking his no-hitter bid to the seventh inning, before the Trojans only hit, a single through the left side. The one-hitter was the first for the Eagles since five pitchers combined for a one-hitter in February of 2001 against Tennessee Tech.
-
Jacob Parker exited his first collegiate game on February 20 in the second game with an injury. He gave up just one run and was saddled with the loss that day. On May 9, Parker returned to the game mound at Kennesaw State, tossing three no-hit innings to earn his first collegiate win.
- Redshirt junior
Matt Geiger joined the Eagles in 2015, pitching well as a freshman. He missed the 2016 season after undergoing surgery. While rehabbing from that surgery, Geiger sustained another injury which kept him out of the lineup for 2017. He returned to the lineup against Coastal Carolina on March 30, closing a span of 1,058 days on the shelf. That total ranks as the longest layoff between games among active players in Division I Baseball.
- Six has been the magic number over the last five years for Georgia Southern Baseball with a 115-16 record when scoring six or more runs. The Eagles were 30-6 last year with six or more.
