Eagles post the highest GPA in department history
STATESBORO, Ga. – The nearly 400 student-athletes who make up the Georgia Southern Athletics Department earned a 3.048 GPA for the 2017-2018 academic year, as announced Thursday by director of athletics Tom Kleinlein. This mark surpasses the past two year's GPA of 3.01, making it the highest mark in department history. It is also the third-consecutive year the student-athletes have reached the 3.0 threshold. This spring, the athletic GPA was 3.05, while the fall GPA was 3.04.
"We continue to set the bar higher and our student-athletes keep hitting the mark," Kleinlein said. "The hard work of Reggie Simpkins and his staff, along with the work put in by our student-athletes, continues to be noticed, recognized and appreciated. Academics are just a part of the total student-athlete experience here at Georgia Southern and the work put in now will pay off when they leave here with a degree and quality education."
Two hundred and twenty-two student-athletes made the Honor Roll this spring, which accounts for close to 60 percent of the department. Forty-two of those student-athletes posted a 4.0 GPA to earn a spot on the President's List, while 82 students made the Dean's List with a GPA of 3.5-3.99. Another 98 made the honor roll for posting a 3.00-3.49 GPA for the semester.
Twelve of the 15 GS programs posted a team GPA of 3.0 or higher in the spring: softball, volleyball, women's basketball, rifle, women's tennis, women's swimming & diving, women's track & field, women's golf, men's tennis, men's golf, men's soccer and baseball. In addition, the football program posted the highest team GPA for an academic year in program history and the third-highest spring GPA in program history.
