QUICK HITS
- Georgia Southern makes its first trip to Little Rock since 2015 this weekend for the season's first league road trip. The Eagles took two of three in the program's last trip to face the Trojans.
- The Eagles dropped an 11-3 decision on Wednesday night as Mercer scored four in the second and four in the third en route to a sweep of the season series.
- Georgia Southern leads the all-time series 17-8 over the Trojans and hold a 6-4 advantage since joining the Sun Belt Conference. The Eagles and Trojans were both members of the Trans-American Conference (now the A-Sun) in the 1980s.
- Through the season's first 29 games, Georgia Southern batters have been hit by 47 pitches to lead the Sun Belt and rank 19th in the nation. Steven Curry has been hit 12 times to lead the league and rank 10th in Division I while Christian Avant has worn 11 pitches to rank third in the league and rank 19th in the nation.
- Jason Swan did his impression of the Frozone, looking out for the greater good, by driving a career-high five runs in the 12-7 win over The Citadel including the go-ahead run.
- Redshirt Freshman Blake Simmons got off to a slow start to his career for the Eagles at the plate, going 0-for-5 in the season's first 19 games. The native of Macon got an opportunity in the series finale against Louisiana with the starting nod. Simmons went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, opening his account at the plate and raising his average to .333.
- For the first 19 games of 2017, the job description for junior Cole Whitney was middle relief and spot starts during the week. On March 18th, Whitney got the call to enter game three against Louisiana in the third inning and quickly put out the fire. He went on to throw a career-high five and a third innings, striking out six and retiring the final 12 batters to take his first win in an Eagle uniform.
- Redshirt junior Matt Geiger joined the Eagles in 2015, pitching well as a freshman. He missed the 2016 season after undergoing surgery. While rehabbing from that surgery, Geiger sustained another injury which kept him out of the lineup for 2017. He returned to the lineup against Coastal Carolina on March 30, closing a span of 1,058 days on the shelf. That total ranks as the longest layoff between games among active players in Division I Baseball.
- Six has been the magic number over the last five years for Georgia Southern Baseball with a 109-15 record when scoring six or more runs. The Eagles were 30-6 last year with six or more.
