Georgia Southern will compete for the Sun Belt's automatic bid to the NCAA Regional when the Eagles travel to Sandestin, Fla., for the Sun Belt Championship.
The Sun Belt champion will be determined by match play for the third straight season. The teams play 18 holes Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, and the top-4 teams advance to match play Wednesday. The top seed will take on the fourth seed, and No. 2 will meet No. 3 in a morning session with the winners squaring off in the afternoon.Â
The event will be held at the Raven Golf Club for the fourth straight season. The Eagles won the title in 2015, their first year in the league, and finished second last season. Steven Fisk and Jake Storey tied for first with two others on the individual leaderboard last year, and Fisk prevailed in a playoff to win medalist honors. Â
GS is coming off a sixth-place finish at the Gary Koch Invitational, which featured three teams ranked in Golfstat's top-50, April 10. The Eagles have finished in the top-6 in 11 of their last 15 tournaments, dating back to last season.
Fisk, Storey and Archer Price have been in the lineup for the last 20 tournaments, dating back to the start of the 2016-17 campaign. Price makes his 41st career start this week, Fisk will make his 33rd career start and Jake Storey is in the lineup for the 37th time. They have a combined six appearances in the Sun Belt Championship at the Raven Club.
The trio will be in the lineup along with sophomore Luukas Alakulppi and freshman Jacob Bayer. Alakulppi makes his sixth start this season, and Bayer gets the nod for the first time in his career. It's the first time GS has used the lineup this season.Â
Fisk is ranked 21st by Golfstat, leads the SBC in scoring average, has shot 72 or better in 23 of 27 rounds this season and finished in the top-10 in six of nine events, including three top-5s and two wins. He became the 13th player in college golf history to shoot 60, reaching the mark in the second round of the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational in October, and he narrowly missed a 16-footer for birdie on his final hole for 59. His 60 was a school and course record, and he followed that round with a 67 to tie for third.
Storey ranks third in the SBC in scoring average and has three top-5 finishes, including two wins, and six top-20 outings this year. Price ranks fifth in the SBC in scoring average and has three top-10 and six top-20 finishes. He tied for 12th at the SBC Championship in 2016 and tied for 10th in 2017.
The Eagles are paired with Arkansas State and Georgia State and will tee off the first hole at 9:15 a.m. ET in Sunday's first round.
