One of the four captains for the Eagles sits down and talks about family, game day superstitions, and something we may not know about her.
The Georgia Southern softball team travels to Madeira Beach, Fla. this weekend to participate in the EMU Madeira Beach Spring Invitational, to face off against Abilene Christian, Eastern Michigan, Jacksonville State, Monmouth University and UMKC.
We sat down with one of the four team captains, Haley Carter, to learn a little more about the Smyrna, Tenn., native with 5 Questions.
Question 1: Why did you choose Georgia Southern University to pursue both you collegiate softball career and your degree?
"A school in Tennessee had already offered for me to play softball there. It was right down the road from my high school, I thought this was the school for me. So I toured Georgia Southern just to rule it out, because it was six hours away from home. But then I fell in love with the campus and we were driving around looking at everything and my parents were blown away. We came on a game day and all the tailgating and excitement… It was our first visit so every visit after Georgia Southern just couldn't compare."
Question 2: What is one thing that people may not know about you?
"I am really an open book… Probably that I am a big daddy's girl. I go and sit in his office all the time. My dad is the track coach here at Georgia Southern, and my parents hate that I didn't do track! I've always loved track, but I hate running. If I weren't playing softball, it would definitely be track."
Question 3: Who is the funniest person on the team?
"I laugh at Heather Felt a lot. She's my roommate too and she's so quiet but when she does speak up, she's so funny. We're always cracking jokes on the team, it's a great way for us to relieve stress."
Question 4: Do you have any superstitions or game day traditions that you can't break?
"We pray before every game. And when I get into the box, I shake my shoulders and draw a line in the dirt. And if I don't do that before I step into the box before every pitch, I'm not comfortable in the box at all."
Question 5: What is a song, phrase or saying that you use to get through a rough day?
"The serenity prayer. It is what I think about on a hard day, I even have a tattoo of serenity on my arm. It is my biggest focal point when I am down, I look at that and I know that everything is going to be all right."
