The Eagles will play an intrasquad scrimmage at the PAC Saturday.
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern volleyball team opened fall camp on campus last Friday, and the Eagles hit the ground running with double sessions through the weekend.
Picked third in the East Division in the Sun Belt Preseason Coaches Poll after placing second last year, the Eagles are a highly-motivated group, which has shown in their workouts.
"It's a new group that has a lot to prove, and all the positive things we saw in the spring have continued in the fall, which is great to see," said head coach Dustin Wood. "Since day one, everything has been consistent as far as what we're doing and what's being asked of them, and they are doing a good job of holding each other accountable. The competitiveness in the gym has been good, and they are making each other better."
Georgia Southern will end camp with a three-day trip to Armstrong State's campus at the end of the week. The Eagles leave Statesboro Thursday morning and will return Saturday evening. GS will play an intrasquad scrimmage that is open to the public Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Pirate Athletic Center.
The Eagles will have some team bonding sessions at Tybee Island and enjoy some of the sights of Savannah, offering an escape from the normal preseason camp experience.
"It gets us away and gives us the ability to do some team bonding things that we wouldn't be able to do here," said Wood. "They have some access to some things that we don't have here, and we're going to take advantage of it. It will be a great way to end camp on a positive note."
Georgia Southern has added an exhibition match to the 2017 schedule as the Eagles will play host to Georgia College Saturday, Aug. 19, at 5 p.m. in Hanner Fieldhouse. Admission is free.
GS, which returns four of its seven starters and 14 letterwinners, will open the campaign at the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational Aug. 25. The Eagles host two tournaments - the Bash in the Boro Sept. 1-2 and the GATA Challenge Sept. 8-9.
Season tickets sales for Georgia Southern volleyball are currently underway, and one $40 season ticket covers general admission seating for all home matches. Parking is free.
