LOS ANGELES – As Georgia Southern students head to their first classes of the semester today,
Steven Fisk will be heading to the driving range. The junior will be competing in the 117th U.S. Amateur, which begins today at The Riviera Country Club and Bel-Air Country Club.
Competitors play 18 holes on each course today and tomorrow, and the top 64 players advance to match play, which begins Wednesday at Riviera.
Fisk shot 69-69=138 (-6) to take third in the 36-hole qualifier at the Piedmont Driving Club back in July. The U.S. Am is the culmination of an excellent summer on the links for Fisk. He also logged third-place finishes at the Southeastern Amateur and Dogwood Invitational.
Along with the prestigious Havemeyer Trophy, among the spoils for the winner is an exemption from local and sectional qualifying for the next U.S. Open, an exemption from qualifying for the next 10 U.S. Amateurs, an exemption from qualifying for the next British Open Championship and a likely invitation to the next Masters Tournament.
Fisk is one of eight returning lettermen for the Georgia Southern golf team that is coming off its 24th NCAA Championship appearance in 2017. The Eagles open the 2017-18 season Sept. 12 at the Invitational at The Ocean Course on Kiawah Island.
