Young players continue to push for playing time
STATESBORO, Ga. – With the third week of practice well underway and camp about to conclude before classes begin next week, the Georgia Southern football team went through a full-tilt practice Thursday morning with a lot of excitement and some key freshmen standing out in the eyes of coaches. A 50-play scrimmage wrapped up the day as some of the younger players had a chance to catch the eyes of the coaches in hopes of playing time this fall.
Camp will conclude Friday morning with the annual Eagle Creek Baptism and then the team will help with Operation Move In in the afternoon. On Saturday, they will hold their second preseason scrimmage and will then move to afternoon practices next week with the beginning of classes.
BASS READY TO KICK … AND CELEBRATE
Redshirt sophomore Tyler Bass takes over the kicking duties in 2017. Last season, Bass handled all kickoffs and the extra points during the Savannah State game. He finished the season with 66 kickoff attempts, accounting 45 touchbacks, and went 6 for 7 on extra points in the season opener.
"As a unit, we have been doing great," Bass said. "We still have improvement to do, but I feel like we are peaking at the right time for the first game. I'm really excited."
During the 2016 season, Younghoe Koo and punter Matt Flynn created a celebration following every made kick attempt. "The Bow" became recognized last season by all fans and even the guys on the team. This season the combination of Flynn and Bass have created something new.
"We just want it to be entertaining for us, our teammates, and our fans," he said. "We couldn't do the bow again, because that was Koo's, so we decided to create something new. It just helps us stay loose and gives us something do to."
With Koo battling for a job in the NFL and the success that he had here at Georgia Southern, Bass has some big shoes to fill. The sophomore feels like he learned a lot from the former kicker and was glad that he was able to use kickoffs from last season to get used to the atmosphere and energy of game day.
"Koo has definitely set the bar high, but I have worked hard throughout summer, spring, and camp now. I'm just going to go out and do my own thing and not worry about what other people think. I learned a lot, just mentally you have to be strong, because sometimes you're going hit adversity and it's all about how you bounce back."
As camp rapidly approached the guys began to run out of ideas that were suitable to be the celebration for this season. The two settled with Rock, Paper, Scissors to begin the season and will be keeping track. Both Flynn and Bass are expecting to win, but the margin of victory is different for each.
"I think I'm going to win, no doubt," Bass said. "I don't think I will win convincingly, but I will find out what his trick is and I'm going to use it to my advantage."
HOLDER OF THE YEAR?
Punter Matt Flynn continues his lobbying for the national placeholder of the year as he is in line to hold for the Eagles again in 2017. During the 2016 season he and Koo created "The Bow" which was well recognized and was shown every time they made a kick. This season Flynn and Bass have created something a bit on the unordinary side for a few different reasons. What everyone wants to know is where in the world did they come up with this idea?
"Well it's actually our media guy, Bryan Johnston, he actually came up with the idea and we just ran with it." Flynn said.
Flynn is currently up for the Peter Mortell Holder of the Year award. One of the requirements for the award is the celebration. Flynn and Bass have been hard at work perfecting their craft, but there is always room for improvement.
"I don't know if it is the best in the country, but I think it is up there. Really, I'm just looking to celebrate with my kicker after he makes the field goal. Anything to celebrate that and get three points on the board is our goal."
As for a prediction to the game, Flynn thinks it's going to be a blowout.
"For sure me, it will get out of hand easily. Hopefully it gets up to 100-20. I want to have a lot of extra points and create a big lead for myself."
COACH READY FOR BAPTISM
Following practice on Friday, the Eagles will partake in the annual Eagle Creek Baptism. The eight seniors along with head coach Tyson Summers, and President Jaimie Hebert and AD Tom Kleinlein will get into the creek to continue one of the best traditions in college football.
"We have so many really neat traditions here," Summers said. "This is one of those that really ties the group of guys who started the program, all the way back to this senior class each year. It is something that they really look forward to each year. It is a way whether you are a coach, a player, a staff member, or a new president like Dr. Hebert was last year, I think it's a way that everyone throughout your program is brought together."
KEEP AN EYE ON THE YOUNG GUYS
There are a lot of freshman making an impact this season in camp. Head coach Tyson Summers mentioned a few names after practice about who has stood out in camp and who will be making a name for themselves this season on the field.
"Wesley Kennedy jumps out as a slot receiver and returner; he is somebody that has stood out to me this camp. I don't know if he is necessarily in the two deep, but he definitely has been impressive is the quarterback, Jaalon Frazier. He has done really well. The defensive line, there have been so many of them. The guy that has really stood out to me has been Brian Miller. He has been running with the twos recently at defensive tackle, but we kind of saw him as a defensive end who could wind up playing offense. Melton Brown Jr. is another defensive interior linemen. The guy that really jumps out to you the most is Raymond Johnson III. Chris Harris Jr. as a linebacker has been impressive and Tamarcio Reese is obviously a newcomer but has a chance of being really good. There are three or four guys that could really have an impact this year."
