STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team will welcome three new members this fall. Head Coach
Sean McCaffrey announced Wednesday, that
Paula Boixader,
Charlotte van Diemen, and
Mila Hartig will be joining the team for the 2017 season. The Blue and White lost seniors
Giulia Riepe and
Mariana Ranzahuer last season.
Â
"I am eager to have all three of these women join our program for the 2017/2018 tennis season," Head coach
Sean McCaffrey said. "After speaking at length with the current team and these three incoming Eagles, I believe we have a strong nucleus to begin a new path towards winning a Sun Belt Conference championship."
Â
Paula Boixader | Barcelona, Spain | Armstrong State University
Paula Boixader is a sophomore transfer from Armstrong State University. Under head coach
Sean McCaffrey, Paula began the season from the number five and six positions, quickly moving up to playing primarily two. She finished off the season 13-6 in singles competition, adding a 15-6 record during doubles play from the number one position.
Â
"Obviously leaving Armstrong after just one year wasn't easy for me," Paula Roca said. "But this is in the past, I want to look forward and be positive. A good thing is that I still have my coach from Armstrong,
Sean McCaffrey, next to me. I learned a lot from him this past year. My personal goal is to bring the mentality of winning and fighting from Armstrong Tennis into Georgia Southern. Overall I am more than excited and I'm sure that the best is yet to come! #GoEagles"
Â
Coach McCaffrey on Paula:
"I am thrilled to have Paula join the Eagles Tennis program. I watched as Paula improved last year at Armstrong and make her way from playing in the lower line up to be our #2 singles player and part of an extremely strong #1 doubles team. Paula only knows how to practice, train and compete with nothing less than maximum effort. She will be a loyal and dedicated teammate to her Georgia Southern tennis family and I can't wait to continue watching her grow."
Â
Charlotte van Diemen | Rotterdam, South Holland | Wolfert Lyceum
Charlotte van Diemen joins the Eagles as a freshman from Rotterdam, South Holland. Van Diemen played tennis at Wolfert Lyceum during her prep years. During those years Charlotte was the Masters Champion of Rotterdam and was also The Hague in September of 2015.
Â
"I am very excited about coming to Georgia Southern because it's a whole new adventure,"
Charlotte van Diemen said. "So many things are different then what I am used to. The school is 20 times bigger, I will speak another language, live far away from home, I get to meet so many new people, make new friends, and start over and be who I want to be. The best part is that I can play the sport I have loved since I was very little, with an amazing team and coach. I am ready to go and live, love, and learn."
Â
Coach McCaffrey on Charlotte:
"Charlotte is a very passionate and dedicated young tennis player. She brings a lot of athleticism and length (being roughly 6 feet tall) to the tennis court and I am fired up to begin working with her."
Â
Mila Hartig | Pretoria, South Africa | Menlopark High School
Mila Hartig joins the Eagles as a freshman from Pretoria, South Africa. Hartig played tennis at Menlopark High School, under head coach Henrik Coertzen. Throughout the first 12 years of playing tennis, Hartig won the South Africa National, South Africa Masters, and was an ITF Singles and Doubles winner. For five consecutive years, she won SA Schools u/15, u/15, u/17, u/19, and u/19 tournaments. She also held Academic Honors for 2013 and 2014. Hartig achieved the highest rank of No. 316 in the ITF Junior Rankings and No. 6 in the South Africa Open.
Â
"I am so excited about joining the Eagle tennis team in January. I cannot wait to be a part of this great team and working together to achieve the same goals. I am a detailed and goal driven individual and I believe this opportunity at Georgia Southern will allow me to reach new heights as a player and a student."
Â
Coach McCaffrey on Mila:
"Mila is very energetic and driven. She has a strong sense of direction and possesses strong leadership qualities. I believe that Mila will make an immediate impact with her squad once she arrives in Statesboro."
