NEW ORLEANS – The Sun Belt Conference announced Friday that Georgia Southern football student-athletes
Wesley Fields and
Chris DeLaRosa will join head coach
Tyson Summers at the 2017 Sun Belt Media Day on July 24 at the Mercedes Benz Superdome located in New Orleans.
Summers enters his second season at the helm of the Eagles and will be looking to improve on last year's five-win season. The Eagles did finish 2016 strong, knocking off co-champion and eventual Dollar General Bowl champion Troy in the finale. The Eagles open preseason camp on July 25 and open the season on Sept. 2 at Auburn.
Fields (6-0, 200; Jr.; Americus, GA) played in nine games last year, starting five … Played in 335 total snaps (298 offensive, 37 special teams) … Had 94 carries for 492 yards and three touchdowns … Also caught 11 passes for 177 yards and three touchdowns … Had a season-high 12 carries for 88 yards against New Mexico State … Recorded rushing touchdowns against Savannah State, ULM and South Alabama … Caught a 42-yard pass against New Mexico State for a touchdown … Tallied receiving touchdowns against Savannah State and Western Michigan as well … Was limited down the stretch by an ankle injury … Enters the 2017 season with 1,174 career rushing yards and 10 touchdowns along with 282 receiving yards and four scores.
DeLaRosa (6-1, 225; Sr.; Longwood, FL) appeared in seven games last year, starting three … Was hampered by a high ankle sprain in the final month of the season … Totaled 326 snaps (218 defensive, 108 special teams) … Recorded 33 tackles, including 5.0 for a loss … Had two sacks, while forcing one fumble and recovering one fumble … Had a season-high 10 tackles against New Mexico State… Had nine tackles against Western Michigan and seven against Arkansas State … Tallied a sack against ULM and New Mexico State … Sack against ULM came on third down on the final drive of the game, forcing a longer game-winning field goal that was blocked … Forced and recovered a fumble against Appalachian State … Did not play after the ASU game due to the injury suffered late in the game … Enters the 2017 with 91 career tackles, including 7.5 for loss and 2.5 sacks.
ESPN3 will broadcast live from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome from 2-4 p.m. ET at media day and will sit down with all head coaches in addition to Sun Belt Conference commissioner Karl Benson.
