Players Returning
Redshirt junior quarterback Andrew Ford, a transfer from Virginia Tech, finished the 2016 campaign 222 of 365 for 2,665 yards and 26 TDs. Playing in 11 games - while starting nine - Ford is looking to take over the roll full time. The Minutemen are returning both their starting running back in Marquis Young, who in 2016 rushed for nearly 1,000 yards and four scores. Young also did it through the air, grabbing 26 passes for 147 yards. Leading receiver Adam Breneman returns after recording 70 catches for 808 yards and eight TDs. Redshirt senior and team leader in tackles Steve Casali returns to give UMass an advantage on defense. Casali recorded 105 tackles last year, including 8.0 TFL and 3.5 sacks, with six pass breakups, three fumble recoveries and a forced fumble from the linebacker position, he led the team in almost all categories. Cornerback Isaiah Rodgers led the team last season with two interceptions. Rodgers is looked upon to be the leader for the young Minutemen secondary this season.
Series History
This will be the third meeting between the Eagles and the Minutemen with the series tied. The last meeting came in the 1999 I-AA quarterfinals with the Eagles winning 38-21 at Paulson Stadium en route to a national title. The Minutemen beat GS 55-43 in the 1998 national championship game in Chattanooga. The two teams will meet again in 2018 in Statesboro.
