Georgia Southern signs two NLI's for Men's Tennis

STATESBORO, Ga. – On Tuesday afternoon, head coach Sander Koning announced two signings that the Georgia Southern Men's Tennis team had just received. The Blue and White added the likes of Pascal Wagemaker and Carlos Garcia to the 2017 roster. The two freshman will join a team who made history last season, becoming the first team since 1983 to complete a perfect season at the Wallis Tennis Center. The Blue and White also became the first team since 1999 and 2000 to have back to back winning seasons.
 
GS finished the season 19-12, making a storied run in the Sun Belt Tournament. The Eagles would upset defending Sun Belt Conference Champions UT-Arlington in a thriller, before falling to South Alabama in the semifinals.
 
Meeting Our New Eagles
 
Pascal Wagemaker, was born in Zuid-Scharwoude, Netherlands, about 30 miles north of Amsterdam. He has one sister Sohpie (15) and attended OSG Willem Blaeu. Wagemaker has played internationally all his life, and has achieved the highest national junior rank of seventh, while the highest state junior rank was first. He has also achieved the high national rank of 154 during his time in the Netherlands. Pascal's best tournament was winning the Nike Junior Tour qualification tournament and reaching the semi-finals of the Final Tournament, as well as winning a Tennis Europe u14 doubles tournament in Reykjavik, Iceland.
 
"I can't wait to finally become a student-athlete at Georgia Southern," Pascal said. "I also can't wait to become a part of a fantastic tennis team."
 
Coach Koning on Pascal: "Pascal is a very bright young man. He has a lot of international experience. He is an all court player with good technique. I am looking forward to working with his to solidify his game and be a consistent contributor for our team."
 
Carlos Garcia, was born in El Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain, and is an only child. Garcia attened IES V Centenario high school and comes to Georgia Southern looking to study Electrical Engineering. Like his fellow signee, Garcia has also played internationally his whole life. His best results entering Statesboro is a semifinals finish of the U-18 doubles state tournament, 3 time team state champion, and a victory against Pablo Baena (Ranked 70 on the men's national ranking)
 
"Becoming a part of Georgia Southern is the best achievement of my career," Garcia said. "It has an amazing group of people to work with, awesome facilities, and I will be able to study the major that I love."
 
Coach Koning on Carlos: "Carlos is a very enthusiastic guy, he loves the game and has practiced with the best in Spain. He is one of those players who is still growing and developing and I believe the best is still to come for Carlos. We will do everything to bring it out of him and be a great competitor."
