STATESBORO - Eight former Georgia Southern football players recently wrapped up NFL rookie minicamps with six leaving camp with invites back for preseason camp in August. The biggest news was that of
BJ Johnson III, who went to the 49ers camp for a tryout and ended up being signed to the 90-man roster after his play.
Joining him in San Francisco is running back
Matt Breida, who signed one of the top free agent contracts for undrafted players shortly after the draft. His versatility will help him as he tries to make the 53-man squad this year, or at worst the practice squad.
Ukeme Eligwe had a good minicamp and will battle for playing time, most likely on special teams early on for the Kansas City Chiefs. He was the lone draft pick from GS this year, being plucked in the fifth round.
Multiple media outlets report that
Younghoe Koo has a great chance of winning the job with the Los Angeles Chargers. The kicker had a good minicamp and will enter the preseason in a battle with Josh Lambo for the job. Lambo struggled with consistency last year and the Chargers have said on several occasions they are looking to upgrade their special teams.
Montay Crockett signed with the Packers after the draft and the speedy receiver could also factor in on special teams. Ironhead Gallon continues to work on his transition from linebacker in college to safety in the pros.

Andy Kwon (Cardinals) and
Bernard Dawson (Seahawks) had tryouts, but were not signed by NFL squads.
Additionally, four other former Eagles are on NFL squads heading into the summer: Edwin Jackson (Colts), Jerick McKinnon (Vikings), J.J. Wilcox (Buccaneers) and Antwione Williams (Lions).
