AUSTIN, Texas – Archer Price carded a 70, and the Georgia Southern men's golf team posted the fourth-lowest score of the day to move into a tie for seventh in Tuesday's second round of regional play at the NCAA Championships at UT Golf Club.
The Eagles (+19) are tied with Wake Forest, which entered the tournament ranked 10th in the country, and NC State, four shots behind fifth-place Arizona State (+15). The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the national championships to be played May 26-31, at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
Texas (-3) maintained its lead on the field, and third-ranked Oklahoma State (+1) shot a 2-under 282 to move into second. Ole Miss (+8) is in third, followed by Iowa State (+14), and College of Charleston (+18) is in sixth. A total of five strokes separates six teams that are fourth through seventh on the leaderboard.
Steven Fisk (-1) backed up his 69 yesterday with a 72 today and is tied for seventh on the individual leaderboard. As it currently stands, the sophomore is tied with Will Zalatoris for the lone individual bid to the finals.
Price (+1) moved up 12 places into a tie for 12th, and Jake Storey (+5) is tied for 26th after shooting a 74 today. Cody O'Toole and Brett Barron each posted a 76 today.
The story
Georgia Southern ranks fifth in the field in par-3 and par-5 scoring, and the Eagles are tied for third with 27 birdies in the tournament. GS got off to another great start today and made the turn 1-under, which momentarily had the Eagles sitting in a three-way tie for fourth.
GS started the day on hole 10 again and played 18, which was the second toughest on the course today and caused the Eagles trouble yesterday, with one just bogey as a team. But five of the seven toughest holes today were on the front nine (3, 5, 6, 7 and 8), and GS shot 12 over as a team on those five holes.
Price started his day with a pair of birdies and added a third on hole 17 to post a 34 on his first nine holes. The junior played his last six holes of the day 1-under with a birdie on 7.
Fisk birdied holes 11 and 13 and made the turn 1-under. He added a birdie on the 4th hole before running into trouble on 5-8, but he ended his round with a tap-in birdie on 9 after laying up in the middle of the fairway and putting his approach to within a foot of the cup.
Storey ran off eight straight pars as he made the turn and got hot at the end of his round. The junior put his approach on 7 within five feet of the cup to make birdie and sank a 17-foot uphill birdie putt on 9.
O'Toole parred 14 holes today but could not get a birdie putt to drop, and Barron made birdie on his first hole of the day and had at least five more lip out on him. But the duo delivered the fourth score the Eagles were missing yesterday to put the team in contention for a trip to the Finals.
Quotables from coach Carter Collins
On getting a good fourth score today
"Cody and Brett played really solid today. Overall, I think the course played more difficult today than it did yesterday. We saw constant 10-15 mile-an-hour wind. A lot of par-3 tees were all the way back, playing 250 plus, all the par-5s that are 600 played all the way back and a couple par-4s over 500 played all the way back. So, we saw every bit of the course, and it had some teeth to it so I'm very proud of how the whole team played today."
On course expectations tomorrow
"I expect it to be tough again tomorrow. It's been very fair, but it's been tough and tomorrow is going to be a battle. We have six, seven or eight teams fighting for the same thing, but we've put ourselves in position with a chance going into the last day. We're so excited for the opportunity; we can't wait to go back out and get started."
On keys to tomorrow
"Keeping your head down. There are scoreboards out here, but we have to ignore them and do our job and add them up at the end. We equate it to swimming, where you jump in the pool, swim as fast as you can and when you touch the wall, you look up and see where you finished. We try to do the same thing on the golf course - keep your head down, keep looking forward do the best you can and see where we finish."
