STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern football team hit the field Thursday morning for its final spring practice at Beautiful Eagle Creek. The team will wrap up its session on Friday morning, bright and early at 6:30 a.m. at Paulson Stadium, before breaking until preseason camp begins on July 25. Following practice, GSEagles.com had a chance to catch up with senior defensive tackle
Darrius Sapp, who is suddenly the veteran along the defensive front after all of the graduations of his position mates.
Q: Being the senior leader on the defensive line what's the biggest thing you want the guys to pride on this season?
A: Making plays and changing the line of scrimmage. One other thing that we want to pride on is being in the backfield and getting tackles for losses.
Q: What's the biggest thing you worked on this offseason?
A: Losing weight, that was the challenge the coaches gave to me. I took that upon myself to lose a lot of weight during the spring.
Q: What does it mean to you, being one of three players to play on offense, defense, and special teams last season?
A: It means I've got to step up a lot in a lot of situations. I have to lead the team, knowing that some of them have never been in the situation. I have to be the one to make sure they are prepared.
Q: Being on a special teams unit that blocked seven kicks last season, what was the biggest thing you guys focused on to achieve the second national rank in that category?
A: Push. Changing the line of scrimmage biggest thing. During the ULM game the blocked kick, Jay and I changed the line of scrimmage and allowed the safety the chance to jump and block it.
Q: How did it feel blocking a kick against Louisiana?
A: It felt good, I didn't think I had blocked it at first. I felt it hit my hand, but it was cold so my hands we sort of numb.
