QUICK HITS
- Georgia Southern opens a new week on Tuesday after winning four of five last week including a series win over UT Arlington.
- Georgia Southern visits the College of Charleston on Tuesday night for the second game in 2017 between the clubs. The Eagles took the game in Statesboro 14-7 back on March 1st. Steven Curry had a team high four hits as the Eagles tallied 19 total base knocks in the game.
- A four run eighth inning put the Eagles ahead late to take a 9-5 win over UT Arlington in Sunday's series finale. The Eagles batted around in the first inning, plating five runs, but UT Arlington fought back before the Eagles put things out of reach. All nine Georgia Southern runs came with two outs in the respective inning.
- The Eagles took the March 1st meeting between the Eagles and Cougars, 14-9 to even the all-time series at 31-31. The Eagles have won three straight games over the Cougars after last year's season sweep.
- The Georgia Southern offense in 2017 has been buoyed by the bats of three freshman who have announced their presence with authority. Steven Curry leads the team with a .347 average from the leadoff spot in the order. Mitchell Golden, despite his recent slump, is hitting .337 between shortstop and third base. Mason McWhorter is hitting .321 in 20 starts with six doubles.
- Senior Adam Kelly picked up his first collegiate win on March 21st at The Citadel. Normally a reliever, Kelly was kept on a controlled start, working four innings, allowing two hits and one run.
- The Eagles defeated UT Arlington 9-5 on March 26th, scoring five in the first and four in the eighth. The impressive stat lying underneath that line is that all nine Georgia Southern runs came with two outs in the respective innings. The Eagles posted four-straight two out hits in both innings. In the eighth inning of the tie game, the Eagles broke Maverick hearts with a single, a triple, a double and a triple in succession to take the win.
- Senior shortstop Evan McDonald missed nine games after being hit in the helmet by a foul ball while in the on deck circle in the finale of the Georgia series. He returned to the lineup on March 17th against South Alabama, returning to his position at shortstop. He has six hits in his last eight games entering the College of Charleston game.
- In the win over College of Charleston, the Eagles "broke" the new manual scoreboard by tallying 19 hits (two more than the scoreboard had numbers for). Since then, Georgia Southern's partner Whitfield Signs created additional signs before the South Alabama series, allowing a maximum of 21 hits or runs to be displayed on the scoreboard.
- The 2017 Sun Belt Tournament is coming to Statesboro starting on May 23, 2017. The new format features two play in games that pit the No. 7 and No. 10 seeds and the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds for the final spots in the field of eight.
