STATESBORO, Ga. – Brett Barron matched the school record by firing a 63, including a 29 on his first nine holes, to help stake the Georgia Southern men's golf team to a lead at the Furman Intercollegiate after the first round Monday at Furman University Golf Course.
Barron is the sixth Eagle to shoot a 63 in school history and the first freshman to card the number. Scott Wolfes was the last Eagle to do it when he shot a 63 in the final round of the Wendy's Kiawah Classic at Turtle Point Golf Course in November of 2014. Barron's round also set a tournament record.
The Eagles (-9) have a one-stroke advantage over 17th-ranked Clemson (-8), and Wofford (-7) is third. Barron (-9) has a three-shot cushion over Jackson Bishop (-6) of Western Carolina.
Jake Storey (-3) shot a 69 and is tied for fifth.
Cody O'Toole posted a 72, while
Steven Fisk and
Archer Price each carded a 75. Individual
Crawford Simmons shot a 73.
The story
Georgia Southern teed off in the morning on hole 10, and Barron took full advantage of his first nine. A pair of eagles on the par 5s on that side and three birdies gave the freshman a 29 as he made the turn. He added three more birdies to move to 10-under before a bogey on hole 7 brought him back to 9-under. Barron has shot under 70 in four of his last seven rounds.
Storey played his first nine holes 2-under with a pair of birdies, made birdies on three of his first four holes after the turn and was 5-under after 15 holes.
O'Toole struggled a bit on his first nine but got hot after the turn. The senior birdied four out of five holes during one stretch and finished with a par. Simmons was 5-over after eight holes but birdied five of the next nine and shot a 33 on his final nine holes.

"Congratulations to Brett on tying the program record of 63 and breaking the freshman scoring record."
