KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Ariana Macioce shot a 2-under-par 70 Sunday at the Osprey Point Golf Club, and the Georgia Southern women's golf team is tied for 18th after the first round of the Edwin Watts Kiawah Island Spring Classic.

The Eagles (+17) are tied with Chattanooga, just five strokes out of the top-10. High Point (+20) is tied for 22nd, three stroked behind Georgia Southern.

Ansley Bowman and Iben Hvass each carded a 77, while Lauren Coe and Yeji Shin both notched an 81.

Two courses are used for the three-day, 54-hole tournament, and the Eagles play Oak Point tomorrow. After 36 holes of play, the top 22 teams will play for the championship at Osprey Point during the final round, while teams 23-43 will play for a flight championship at Oak Point.

The story
Macioce posted a team high six birdies on the day and after making the turn 1-over, really got going on the back nine. A birdie on hole 10 sparked a stretch of three birdies in four holes and after parring 15, 16 and 17, the sophomore dropped in a birdie on 18.

Hvass birdied her first two holes of the day and played the front nine even par, while Bowman birdied her first two holes and played the first 13 holes 1-over.

Quotable from coach Emily Kuhfeld
"We have some ground to make up over the next few days, but these five can do it. Getting off to a strong start is something we are continuing to work on, and we were able to bring it back today a little bit but then had a few short game mistakes towards the end. Ari is off to a good start with a strong round and is looking to continue her strong play tomorrow. Kiawah is a special place, and we are looking forward to a great day tomorrow."

Next up
The Eagles will tee off on hole 10 on the Oak Point course tomorrow at 10 a.m. GS is paired with Elon, Oral Roberts and Towson.
